Hickory stripe fabric originated in late 19th-century America as a heavy-duty cotton workwear material designed specifically for railroad workers, engineers, and mechanics. Named after hickory wood to symbolize its extreme toughness. This distinct pattern was highly practical, as it cleverly disguised soot, oil, and grease during long shifts on steam locomotives. By the 1920s, the fabric became an official industrial standard, cementing its legacy as an iconic symbol of American railroad history before eventually transitioning into workwear especially for industrial work.
